Daily Faith with Philip Cameron: Special Guest Pastor Dave Allman
About this episode
Pastor Dave Allman of New Life Church in Poland, Ohio joins Daily Faith to deliver a timely, Scripture-rooted message on navigating life's most painful seasons with unshakeable faith. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 3 — "for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven" — Dave unpacks why seasons of struggle are not signs of God's absence but of His active, transforming work in our lives.
Dave shares his own story with raw honesty: 26 years ago, while serving as a youth pastor in Albany, Georgia at the height of a thriving ministry, his wife Liz was diagnosed with advancing breast cancer and given only a 50/50 chance to survive. Years later, a second winter arrived when a church plant failed to grow as expected, leaving him feeling, in his own words, "trapped… abandoned… and so close to just throwing in the towel on ministry." Out of those crucibles came three defining questions every believer can ask in a hard season: How can this season direct me? How can this season correct me? And how can this season perfect me?
Dave also opens up about overcoming performance-based acceptance — the belief that God's approval is tied to visible success — and how he discovered that "who I am is much more important than what I do." If you are in a winter season today, this conversation is for you. Learn more about New Life Church at newlifepoland.com.
“For every devastation there is a revelation. And this is when God — if we'll listen — God will reveal something about himself to us, or he will show us something about ourselves that we must learn during those seasons.”
“God is much more interested in my character than he is in my calling. My heavenly Father in his infinite sovereign wisdom is transforming me during winter seasons and seasons that I don't like. He is taking me and transforming me into the image of his dear son Jesus.”
“No matter what season you're in, God is in that season. You may be in the best season of your life — God is in that season. But you may be in the worst season. You may be in a losing season. You may be in a winter season. God is in that season. And I want to tell you something: don't quit. Because here's what I know — spring is coming, spring is coming, spring is coming.”
What's Discussed
Pastor Dave Allman, senior pastor of New Life Church in Poland, Ohio, brings a message anchored in Ecclesiastes 3 on the cyclical nature of life's seasons. He recounts two defining personal winters: his wife Liz's breast cancer diagnosis in Albany, Georgia — when she was given a 50/50 survival chance — and a later season of ministry struggle that left him feeling abandoned and ready to quit. From those experiences, Dave distills three questions for believers in hard seasons: How does this season direct me (revelation)? How does this season correct me (exhortation, drawn from Hebrews 12)? And how does this season perfect me (transformation)? He also addresses performance-based acceptance and the liberating truth that God's approval is rooted in sonship, not success.

Intro
Philip:Hey, my friends. Welcome to Daily Faith today. My name is Philip Cameron. And boy am I glad to see you today. I got to bed at five o'clock this morning. I didn't sleep. My grandson came in to see me at seven o'clock and says, granddad, Donald Trump won.
Philip:I says, I know, I was watching him till five o'clock in the morning. And he's holding my hand and he's talking in the darkness of my room, excited. Let me tell you something. I believe that a curse has been lifted off this country, because as of today, this country has a pro-life position.
Philip:Our government is coming in, believes in the sanctity of life. It believes in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. And you can't go against God's laws, you cannot go against God's laws without consequence. And we had an amazing night watching the election returns.
Philip:What's funny is I've got a whole bunch of family in Moldova and a whole bunch of family in Scotland. So as I was winding down, they were waking up in Scotland just discovering what was happening. So I was getting texts from everywhere. What do you think? Do you think he's gonna get the last of these states?
Philip:So they kept me going. And one of our leaders in Moldova, her name is Nadia, she's been with us — we rescued her just 17 years ago. And she text me this morning and she says, in Moldova everyone's saying, congratulations, America, you've had a boy.
Philip:And so we are just absolutely ecstatic about the result last night. I believe that if America grabs this second opportunity of grace, I believe that America, as it was going, was going off the cliff. I believe that America was making decisions, and we were about to make even more decisions if this current administration had continued.
Philip:Let me tell you, if Kamala Harris had become the President, there would've been no end of darkness pouring out of that administration. And I just, sometimes I felt like a voice crying in the wilderness all by myself. But I feel so good.
Philip:And the scripture came to me this morning: when the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like those that dreamed, and our mouths are filled with laughter. And I believe today is a day of joy. I pray for President-elect Trump. I believe that he's gonna put together a bunch of guys and gals that are gonna change the texture and the nature of government.
Philip:And it needs to get overhauled and all the cronyism needs to be taken away. I just can't wait. Can you imagine Elon Musk in charge of cutting waste in the government? To give you an idea of his ability — when he bought Twitter, he reduced it by 75% of the workforce. And I think that's a good number to start with, for our government to reduce government by 75%.
Philip:I think that would help us get our affairs in order real quick. So I'm just so grateful to God. I'm thankful to every one of you that voted. I've been shouting at you for the last few weeks about the church not voting. And obviously a bunch of the church voted yesterday.
Philip:And I'm so grateful to you and I'm so grateful to God. And I pray for President-elect Trump, that God's wisdom will overshadow him. There have been many prophecies about this man going into power and having a real experience — I mean, a Holy Ghost experience with Jesus.
Philip:And can you imagine if his wisdom and his ability business-wise can be wed to a hunger for God, we could see a river of righteousness flow across this country. And I am praying for that.
Philip:We've got a great guest today, a dear friend of mine that I just absolutely love so much. And his wonderful wife, Liz — he pastors New Life Church in Poland, Ohio. And it's a church that is on the cusp of revival. I watch every week. I'll look and see what they're doing. And you get that sense that you get when God's moving in a church. If you are anywhere near Poland or Ohio, you need to go and visit this church.
Philip:And go up to my friend and say, Dave, I was watching you on Daily Faith. I had someone the other day come up to me — I was in a mall somewhere, or I was out and about somewhere — and they says, I know you, you are from Daily Faith.
Philip:And so we are just grateful today for what God's doing. I believe there's a new day. The atmosphere feels different in my spirit, and I believe that we are about to see something great. Do me a favor, share this broadcast. I believe that Pastor Dave's gonna be talking about something that will encourage you.
Philip:But if you know someone in your life — now listen to me — that is going through a battle, a tough situation. You see, when you get into it — I've been there, believe me, I've been there. I know Pastor Dave's been there too. He's gonna be talking about it today. I walked with him through some of the darkness.
Philip:But what I'm saying is this: your words of encouragement, you saying, hey, I was thinking about you — and these guys are gonna be talking about this today — you're not stuck where you are. You are in the process of coming out the other side of it. And if you've got a friend, maybe your pastor is going through a tough time, contact them right now.
Philip:Daily Faith TV is how you get in contact with us. Real simple. If you dial Daily Faith TV on your phone or your iPad or whatever, you'll get right to us live as we are doing this at this minute. And you can go on YouTube slash Daily Faith. I think we're almost up to a thousand viewers now.
Philip:That's pretty good. I'm happy for that, because it takes a long time to get there. YouTube.com/Daily Faith. And we're just gonna have a great time. I really believe that what Pastor Dave Allman's gonna speak today is going to be life and hope.
Philip:And let me say this — on the YouTube.com/Daily Faith, I do reels all the time, 45-second thoughts. And they have become very, very popular. I think we've had 3 million views in the last few months. It's amazing. And we want you to look at those and watch those, because I believe it may just be the nugget you need in your spirit to keep going onto victory. I'll tell you now, victory is on its way.
Philip:I'm delighted you're with us. Welcome to Daily Faith.
Philip:Good morning to you today, whatever time you're watching us. We are delighted to have you with us — afternoon or night, we are live right now. Daily Faith is on the air. We are just so grateful to have you with us. Boy, did we have a long night last night. As I'm recording this today — if you're watching this on a repeat somewhere — I was up until five o'clock this morning waiting for the results of the election.
Philip:And I cannot be anything other than to tell you that I'm thrilled about what's happened. I believe that America has given itself a second chance for God to do something in our country. Let me encourage you as a Christian: speak what you believe. If you don't speak it, people will assume that you don't have anything important to say and they will prejudge you and put you in a category.
Philip:And for so long I've been shouting and hooting and hollering in the church. I was on TV last night with Jim Bakker on his — they did an election program all through the night. And I was with him for a while. And the one thing I kept saying was, if we lose the night, it is because of the church's failure.
Philip:Millions of Christians, millions of Christians don't vote. And I think that's a sin. That's a sin. And we need to get everyone — our churches need to be active in participation with our government and with our country.
Philip:We can't sit in the corner and say, well, we'll just pray about it. I believe in prayer with every fiber of my being. I also believe in voting with every fiber of my being. And I am the salt and light of this earth. And if I lose my savor, if I lose my voice and my position in this thing, then I've lost my purpose for being.
Philip:And so we're just so thrilled. President-elect Trump — rather, President Trump, 45 and 47 — is on his way to the White House. And I believe that God is going to use that as a spark plug to bring a revival to America, because America made decisions yesterday. We made decisions for life.
Philip:Let me tell you something. The government that would've been — if the administration that's in right now would've continued — life would've been cheapened and devalued even further. Marriage would've been cheapened and divided even further. Transgenderism, kids, boys in girls' sports and in girls' bathrooms and showers — it would've been normal by the time they finished.
Philip:And enough of America stood up and says, whoa, that's not who we are. That is not who we are. And we are just delighted, delighted, delighted. We have a mission work in Moldova and Ukraine. We've been there for 35 years, 35 years. I've traveled there over 200 times in those passing years.
Philip:And we have a place, an amazing place in Moldova called Vatra Village. It is a village right on the largest lake in the country. It was built for rich people to have a summer dacha on the lake. And they poisoned that lake with algae — to kill the algae with chlorine — and these buildings, they never finished them. And they sat there for nine years. And God challenged me one day to believe God for them.
Philip:And I'm happy to tell you that we were able to pay them off cash. And all the furniture inside was shipped from America because the quality is so much better. And those kids — we rescue them from the orphanages and from horrendously poor families. And we put them back in school and we tell them, if you are born, God has a plan. And the most incredible miracles are taking place. These kids who come to us as orphans get saved and become sons and daughters.
Philip:My wife came in this morning and read me the most beautiful text she got from one of our girls: you've changed my life forever. And they come to be sons and daughters. And then the first thing we do is we get them out onto the fields, preaching and sharing and giving food and clothes to desperate people. And we are seeing miraculous things happen.
Philip:A young girl called Ana came to us with no hope, absolutely no hope. She wanted to be a doctor. That was her crazy dream that she never even dared to verbalize. And she's been with us now for two years. And here's her story. Watch this.
The most devastating moment from my life was when I had 12 years. And I became an adult just in one night when I had to save my mother's life.
Hello, my name is Erlana. I was born in a small village in Moldova. I have an older brother, and they should have an older sister that could take care of me. When I was a child, I knew what it means to work, because I helped my parents to raise animals and to work the land.
My father was violent with me and my family. The most devastating moment from my life was when I had to save my mother's life, because my father was beating her so bad. After the moment with my mother, when I had to save her life, and I didn't know how to do it, I realized that I want to become a doctor to save many others' lives.
When I finished high school, I was afraid because I didn't know what to do and how to continue my studies because of the financial situation in my family. And I prayed a lot and God gave me the answer. And it was Orphan's Hands.
Now I'm studying to become a doctor, and I want my future profession to be a way to serve the people, because by saving the bodies I want the souls to be saved as well. Thank you for everything you're doing for me and my future. May God bless you.
Philip:An amazing story of redemption. Every girl you see in our videos — if a trafficker gets them, they are worth $300,000 a year for the human trafficker. Three girls makes a million dollars a year. Throw them a happy meal once a day and beat them and a few drugs to keep them calm, and they'll lie in that bed being serviced by men 30 to 50 times a day.
Philip:That's what could have happened if there wasn't an Orphan's Hands and a Vatra Village for her to stay in. She's the second doctor we've had, really back to back. We'll stay with her for six years. The last girl, Natalia — her mother was bedridden and we literally cared for her mother for six years to free her up from working in the fields to keep her mother fed. We fed her mother to allow her to go to medical school. And she's now a doctor.
Philip:And her whole future, her whole life is transformed. Her mother's life is transformed. The baby she has will be raised in a godly Christian home because someone like you cared enough to give a dollar a day.
Philip:The miracle of Vatra — all that we're doing in Moldova and Ukraine. We have a tremendous home in Ukraine, a beautiful home. We've just been offered a second one. And our girls literally live under the threat of Russian missiles and tanks. Amazing things are taking place. And God is allowing us to do that because someone like you has watched a program or been in a church service with us and said, I would like to help.
Philip:And the impact you have for eternity for a dollar — it's the greatest bargain I've ever heard of. For less than the price of a Coke, you can save a girl like Erlana, and you can rescue her and put her back in school, and for eternity her life is transformed. We need your help. We are about to grow even bigger.
Philip:We've got two new houses and a farm that we're believing God for right this minute. It's crazy. And this new place will be for little kids, for little boys and girls of seven and eight and nine and six years of age, 12 years of age. And they'll stay in those homes safe from the abuse of the orphanage, so that when they become 16, we can take them to Vatra Village and put them in school and put them in college and have their lives transformed.
Philip:Can you help me do this? Can you be part of this with me? It's really simple. You can make a check — if you're writing a check the old-fashioned way — to the Orphan's Hands, PO Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee 37716. You can go right now to Daily Faith TV. So easy: www.dailyfaith.tv.
Philip:And there's a giving page there. You just fill out the places to fill out and let us know that you are gonna stand with us, that you're gonna be part of our Orphan's Hands family. We also have an 800 number — that's how I would do it, because I'm not really good on the computer. 833-Daily Faith. Just dial in Daily Faith on the pad. And a real-life person will pick up your phone call.
Philip:There are businessmen watching me just now — you can include us at your business. You'd never even know you are doing it, but God does. And he said, if you care for the widow and the orphan, he's gonna bless you in return. The Bible says, when you give to the poor, you lend to the Lord. Every gift you give to the poor, God considers that a loan. And God will never be in your debt, I promise you.
Philip:And he gives better interest rates than any bank in the world, I promise you this. Maybe you've got someone in your family that's lost and you're thinking, my God, will my family ever get saved? Help me help someone that has no family to believe with them. And it can be the very seed planted to transform a life forevermore.
Philip:Thank you so much. I believe God's talking to your heart and you'll be obedient to his voice. I am so honored to have my friend with me today. Dave Allman has been part of my life for many years. And we met each other when we were both going through a tremendous struggle and we leaned on each other. And a friend that is born in adversity is a real friend. This isn't a fair-weather friend.
Philip:A real friend is there when the clouds are blue and the sun is shining. A real friend is there when they're in the trenches with you saying, you can make it, you can make it, you can go through this thing. And I'm thrilled to have him with me. Dave, thank you so much for taking time to be with me on Daily Faith today.
Dave Allman:God bless you, Brother Philip. I am absolutely overjoyed and honored to be part of the program today. And I know you did not ask me to say this, but I want to just put a word out there — listen, if there was ever a ministry that was reaching out and was the intersection where lives are being changed and transformed, it is the Orphan's Hands ministry.
Dave Allman:We have been so thrilled to be partners for the last 10, 12 years. And we are just thrilled at what God is doing. And that video just brought me to tears. So thank you, Brother Philip, for having me on the program today.
Philip:Listen, you have been so generous. Your church has been such a part with us. And we are just delighted to have you with us. In fact, what happened was in Ukraine the last time Ukraine was invaded — when the Russians came close, all the traffic ran to Moldova. There were other countries as well, but we were concerned about the Moldova sector. And all the two-lane roads became one lane and we couldn't get our van in to pick up our girls. And this has been absolutely bugging me and terrifying me.
Philip:And we went to New Life in Poland and we shared this vision of getting our own van. And to our amazement, this church said, we are standing in the gap. And right now as we speak, right this minute — it's nighttime in Moldova and Ukraine — there's a van sitting that is kept full of diesel. It never gets below one stroke from full and they fill it back up again.
Philip:Because I want at a moment's notice — if the Russians have invaded the waterfront, they literally could come across and come up to our houses — our girls can get in that van and run to safety. And that was made possible by New Life. Dave, I just can never thank you enough. You have saved lives by your generosity.
Philip:You and I went through it individually, but we ended up meeting together in some pretty dark days. But God has brought us through. You now pastor a ridiculous church — I mean, it is absolutely, every time I go there, you can taste revival in the air. I mean, it's that kind of church. And I know there are people watching just now that are where we were, that are going through the dark seasons, and they're wondering today, will this ever end? Is there any hope for me? Talk to us.
Dave Allman:Thank the Lord. Well, let me just share with you briefly today. I was praying about what God would have me to say on the program today. And the verse that came to my mind — in fact, there are several, but just to keep it short — Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 3, he basically says this: for everything there is a season, for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3 and Cyclical Seasons
Dave Allman:And then he lists a bunch of those seasons. For instance, he says there's a time to be born, there's a time to die, there's a time to plant, a time to pluck up what's planted, and on and on he goes — a time to heal, a time to kill, a time to weep, a time to laugh, and all of those things. And what he was really saying is, seasons are cyclical. In other words, they run in circles. They're not here to stay. If you don't like what season you're in today, hold on, because it's about to change.
Dave Allman:And the reason it's gonna change is because God is in every one of those seasons. I was thinking about this — we are in the fall season here in Ohio, and we have, unlike some places in the country, all four seasons. And I love the four seasons. I really do. I love the beauty of the fall. I don't mind a little bit of the winter season. Don't like it for too long.
Philip:A couple of days will do me good.
Dave Allman:Yeah, a couple of days will do. And then I love the warm spring, and the hot summers — those are fine. And I realize they're different in every culture and every place depending on where you live. But I was thinking that our lives are like those four seasons that we experience throughout the year.
Dave Allman:Our lives are not lived out in long, eternal seasons. We don't always live on the mountaintop of God's blessing and prosperity and health and wealth and all of that. Sometimes we live in the valley of struggle and pain and sorrow. Not every day of our life is going to be a bright, shiny summery day. Sometimes we live in the blast of the cold, windy winter weather. And that's where it's difficult sometimes. I'm sure those of you that are listening today are identifying with me.
Liz Allman's Breast Cancer Battle
Dave Allman:I want to just share — maybe one day I'll come back and share the whole testimony. But there was a time, my wife Liz and I, 26 years ago — in fact, this past October was 26 years — my wife and I were having the time of our lives in a church in Albany, Georgia. We were youth pastors in those days. And God had turned around that church and turned around our youth ministry there from just basically hardly anything to over a couple hundred kids that were on fire with God. We were at the mountaintop.
Dave Allman:And wouldn't you know, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was advancing. And she was told that she only had a 50-50 chance to live. And we had hoped that the cancer had not spread. And we came to find out the cancer had spread into her lymph system, and she had to go through all of the chemo treatments and the radiation. It was just heart-wrenching hell for her and for me.
Ministry Failure and Feeling Abandoned
Dave Allman:And we had gone from this mountaintop experience, from enjoying this warm summer, to now a cold blast of the winter weather. And we were just devastated. And then there were other times — Philip, you had mentioned the truth is 10 or 15 years ago when we first met — we had left this amazing church that we had turned around, at that time it was in Jackson, Georgia.
Dave Allman:And now God is just using Pastor Jeremiah in a great way there in Locust Grove. But we were appointed by the district to take over this little struggling church. And we thought that God was going to just use us in the same way he used us in Jackson. And I just have to be honest with you, it didn't turn around the way that I felt that it should. And it was in those moments that I felt like a failure and I was just depressed.
Philip:The devil always gets you at that point. He's the accuser of the brethren. So when you're in a downturn, that's when he comes and says, you'll never get out of this, you're stuck forever.
Dave Allman:That's the hell of the devil. It is so true. And the term I kept using with my wife was, I felt trapped. I felt like God was done with me. I felt abandoned. I felt all alone. Literally, I cannot express to you enough — and you know this — I was so close to just throwing in the towel on ministry and calling it quits.
Dave Allman:I mean, again, we went from tremendous ministry there in Jackson to not so much of what we felt like God wanted to do. Now, it was in those seasons — and this is what I wanted to tell your audience today — I learned, as I came out of the other side of that, some things through those seasons. And the questions that I learned to ask were simply these.
How This Season Can Direct You
Dave Allman:Number one, when you're in a tough season, ask yourself this: how can this season direct me? It's what I call the season of revelation. I've always said it like this: for every devastation there is a revelation. For every devastation there is a revelation. And this is when God — if we'll listen — God will reveal something about himself to us, or he will show us something about ourselves that we must learn during those seasons.
Dave Allman:And during that season is when I had really struggled all of my life, Brother Philip, with what we call PBA — performance-based acceptance. As a little boy playing in the bars and nightclubs and country music shows all over the place and fronting for shows with George Jones and Johnny Paycheck, all I ever experienced was people clapping for me all the time. So I based my relationship with God on that. I thought that God's approval and acceptance for me was when things were going well.
Performance-Based Acceptance vs. Sonship
Dave Allman:What I had learned in that season was this: who I am is much more important than what I do. And I learned that God's approval and acceptance in my life was based on sonship, not on my performance. So when you're in a season like that, you have to ask yourself, how can this season direct me?
Dave Allman:The second question I learned to ask was, how can this season correct me? I call this the season of exhortation. I get this through the book of Hebrews in chapter 12, that says, don't forget the exhortation that addresses you as sons and daughters. And this is what it says: don't take lightly the Lord's discipline or lose heart when God is disciplining you, because he loves and disciplines every son that he receives.
How This Season Can Correct You
Dave Allman:It goes on to say, if you are without discipline, you are an illegitimate son or daughter of God. If God's not dealing with you, you're not a son. And so you have to ask yourself, how can this season correct me? Is there a sin I need to confess? Is there a change that I need to make? Is there an attitude that I need to adjust? And those are painful questions, but they're needed.
Dave Allman:Then the last thing that I have learned to ask myself when I'm going through these seasons is, how can this season perfect me? This is what I call the season of transformation. I have come to understand that God is much more interested in my character than he is in my calling. My heavenly Father in his infinite sovereign wisdom is transforming me during winter seasons and seasons that I don't like. He is taking me and transforming me into the image of his dear son Jesus.
How This Season Can Perfect You
Dave Allman:So here's all I want to tell the audience today: no matter what season you're in, God is in that season. You may be in the best season of your life — God is in that season. But you may be in the worst season. You may be in a losing season. You may be in a winter season. God is in that season. And I want to tell you something: don't quit. Because here's what I know — spring is coming, spring is coming, spring is coming.
Dave Allman:And so I want to encourage you today, folks, no matter what season you're in, you hang in there. You keep persevering. And you ask yourself those three questions: how does this season direct me? How does this season correct me? And how does this season perfect me?
Spring Is Coming — Don't Quit
Philip:Amazing. What a word from the Lord. If you are watching just now and you are thinking, I'm stuck — you're not stuck at all. God's working. This morning, one of our reels I saw — I recorded it a few weeks ago — he works in ways I cannot see, he will make a way for me. And right now you may feel the furthest away from God you've ever been. You may feel full of despair, like the sun will never shine again. God is working in ways you cannot see. Trust him.
Philip:Dave Allman is pastor of New Life Church in Poland, Ohio. The website is really simple: newlifepoland.com. If you're anywhere near him, go to one of his services. I promise you, you'll be made aware of the presence of God. Dave, thank you so much for being with me. We have got to do this again and more often, because you fed my soul today. My weary soul feels better for having you with me today.
Philip:Thank you guys for watching us at Daily Faith. Please take a note of this and be back here again tomorrow. We love you so much. Bye-bye for today.
For over 25 years, the Cameron family has been changing the lives of orphans in Romania and Moldova — from providing running water, flushing toilets, and clean wells to coal for heat, new windows, as well as food and clothing. They champion the physical needs of the orphans in these broken and desolate countries. Many of Moldova's orphans are saved from the horrors of trafficking through homes founded by the Camerons. And in the process, orphans become daughters and sons.
They come to know their heavenly Father and are forever changed by the love of Jesus. God helped the Camerons lift these amazing young men and women out of darkness. Now no longer orphans, they want to return and invade that very same darkness with the light of Jesus Christ. The Orphan's Hands equips these daughters and sons to become missionaries.
Your monthly gift of $31 will allow us to rescue and take in more girls and boys, saving them from the hell of human trafficking. Your monthly partnership will allow us to care for those in the Orphan's Hands homes in Moldova and Ukraine. If you want to join Philip and Chrissy in taking care of these precious young people, please contact us today by calling 833-Daily Faith.

Common questions
What are the three questions Pastor Dave says you should ask yourself during a tough season?
Pastor Dave says to ask: How can this season direct me? How can this season correct me? And how can this season perfect me? He frames these as the seasons of revelation, exhortation, and transformation — each one a way God uses hard times to reveal something about himself, correct something in you, or shape your character.
What did Pastor Dave mean when he said he struggled with 'performance-based acceptance'?
Growing up performing in bars and country music shows — even opening for acts like George Jones and Johnny Paycheck — Dave was always met with applause, and he carried that into his faith. He believed God's approval depended on how well things were going. It was during a painful ministry season that he learned who he is matters far more than what he does, and that God's acceptance is based on sonship, not performance.
What dark season did Pastor Dave and his wife Liz go through that almost made him quit ministry?
Dave describes two major low points: first, his wife Liz was diagnosed with advancing breast cancer 26 years ago and given only a 50-50 chance to survive, requiring chemotherapy and radiation. Later, after leaving a thriving church in Jackson, Georgia, he took over a struggling congregation that never turned around the way he hoped — leaving him feeling like a failure, trapped, and on the verge of walking away from ministry entirely.
What is Pastor Dave's main takeaway from Ecclesiastes 3 about hard times?
Pastor Dave points to Solomon's teaching that there is a season for everything, and emphasizes that seasons are cyclical — they don't last forever. His core message is that God is present in every season, good or bad, and that no matter how brutal a 'winter season' feels, spring is always coming.
