Daily Faith with Philip Cameron: Special Guest Juan Martinez
About this episode
Pastor Juan Martinez, author of Prison Break and founder of Get Free Church in Spring, Texas, joins Daily Faith to deliver a message that cuts straight to the heart of spiritual captivity. Juan draws on a remarkable personal journey — including ten years in physical prison followed by what he calls "23 years of the bars I placed around my own heart" — to show that the deepest prisons are the ones we build from unbelief, false beliefs, and unexamined lies.
Rooted in Luke 10:42 and Psalm 139, Juan challenges believers to stop accumulating head knowledge and start meditating on the Word until truth and lie have, in his words, "a cataclysmic collision" that sets them free. He unpacks why so many Christians carry the same bondage as people behind physical bars — cycling through the same patterns because, as he puts it, "you were incarcerated before you got incarcerated." He also reframes prayer through Matthew 6:10, arguing that intercession is not a wish list but the act of bringing heaven's kingdom to earth.
Prison Break includes daily readings, prayer prompts, and fasting guidance designed to move readers from study into genuine encounter. Get the book at juanmartineztv.com or on Amazon. This episode is your invitation to stop waiting for freedom and start walking in it.
“Those if-onlys can rob you of your destiny. And I come against every negative and fearful thought that you have today. And I believe that today is gonna be a prison break day for you in the name of Jesus.”
“I've done 10 years of physical prison and 23 years of the bars that I've placed around my heart. When they hear the story, they go, oh, this book is about your life in prison. And I go, no, no, no. When I go speak to the guys in prison — I have a prison ministry — but it's out here I'm setting the captives free. When I go to the prisons, it's just a great place to go fishing. It's a pond that's already filled with people.”
“Deliverance at its finest is when God's truth meets your lie and they have a cataclysmic collision. That's what sets you free.”
What's Discussed
Pastor Juan Martinez of Get Free Church in Spring, Texas, discusses his book Prison Break, arguing that most spiritual captivity stems not from outward circumstances but from deeply rooted lies and unbelief. Drawing on Luke 10:42 — Mary's choice of "the one thing necessary" — and Psalm 139, Juan contends that Christians study without meditating, accumulating knowledge while remaining bound. He distinguishes knowing about Jesus from truly knowing the Word, and reframes prayer (Matthew 6:10) as bringing heaven to earth rather than presenting a wish list to God. The book includes daily readings, prayer prompts, and bonus chapters on prayer and fasting to guide readers from intellectual faith into transformative encounter.

Intro
Philip:Hey, my friend. Welcome to Daily Faith. My name is Philip Cameron. And boy, do we have a guest for you. I've never met this man before, but I talked to him and in the five minutes I've been talking to him, I found a friend and I feel a real kindred spirit with him. And I believe that Juan Martinez is gonna bless you today with a word from the Lord.
Philip:Listen, I know the weight and the burdens we can carry in our lives and how these weights can get ahold of us, just kind of sneak up on us and imprison us. He's written a book entitled Prison Break. And this is the day for your prison break. Do you hear me? This is the day for your prison break, and I can't wait to hear him speak.
Philip:And we do a little warmup before the actual show begins, just to gather some folk on social media. They tell me today that we've had 5 million responses in the last couple of months. So we are growing and we are so thankful for that. Keep watching us and sharing it with your friends on these social medias.
Philip:And as we are going on other different networks, we are just so excited. Our voice is being heard. It just never fails to amaze me how many places all over the world we get emails from. And if you watch Daily Faith and you have never contacted us, today's the day to do so. Just say, hey, I'm watching you from wherever, and that lets us know. I come from the northeast corner of Scotland, and to think that a boy from Scotland can reach so many folk around the world.
Philip:Many of our friends in Africa, in Europe contact us. I've got one dear friend in Scotland called Gary Small, and he writes me every day and likes the program every day. And I appreciate you, Gary. Yesterday night, let me tell you, I might as well confess if I'm acting a bit stiff today, it's because I am. I went to a new chiropractor yesterday and got into their office at seven o'clock last night and didn't leave until half past eleven. They beat me, put me on different machines, and my back is — so I went to get cured of a sore back and I came out worse than I went in.
Philip:So I'm hoping, please, Lord, that all of this will end up for my good. All things, all things work together for my good. Even a chiropractor that's gonna kill you halfway through. If you could turn on your notification for the program before we start and share this with a friend on any of the social medias, that's great. And we're also on YouTube and our numbers are growing there also. It's really simple to get there: youtube.com/dailyfaith.
Philip:And also let me say this: Daily Faith TV is our home base. All the programs we've done are all cataloged on Daily Faith TV, and there's a shop there. You can click on shop and we've got some of the coolest T-shirts, coffee mugs, baseball hats, and all kinds of stuff there. And that merchandise, when you buy that, that helps us help the kids that we work with in Moldova and Ukraine.
Philip:I've got some great stories coming up and great reports coming off of there. So listen, I'm delighted to have you with us. This program is gonna help you. It may even change your life, so don't you dare go anywhere.
Philip:Hey, my friend, welcome to Daily Faith. I am so glad to have you with us today. My name is Philip Cameron, and God has a purpose and a plan for your life. You are not a mistake. You are not a piece of flotsam and jetsam on the sea of life. God has a plan and a purpose for you. He has made you in his image and you are not a mistake.
Philip:And God wants to let you know today — through maybe a Scottish accent, what can I tell you — but whatever you're going through, God has a purpose and a plan to break the yoke in your life. We have got a great guest today with us. Juan Martinez wrote this book entitled Prison Break, and I'm excited to hear what he's gonna share, because there's stuff in your life that's holding you down, that's imprisoning your heart and your soul.
Philip:The if-onlys of your life. Listen to me. The if-onlys. If only I was smarter, if only I was younger, if only I was — whatever. Those if-onlys can rob you of your destiny. And I come against every negative and fearful thought that you have today. And I believe that today is gonna be a prison break day for you in the name of Jesus.
Philip:Talking about prison breaks — for the last 35 years, 35 years ago, I went to Romania at the behest of my dad. I didn't want to go. I had no interest in orphanages and stuff. That was not my lane, as they say. And he kept calling me about babies dying in Romania. It was during the revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall. And after a week of just saying, you know, you gotta help, you gotta help, he said, well, I'm going by myself now. He was recovering from cancer surgery and he says, I'm going, if I die, it's your fault. And that's how I ended up going — to keep my father from accusing me of killing him.
Philip:And I go to this orphanage. I just wanted to get in, get out, go home. I'd taken him, he was the one that was upset. I just was doing a good son's deed. And walked into this place and it blew my mind. Walked up the stairs in salon number five, and there's a wee boy's face in a crib, maybe 30 kids in this room. Iron beds painted with lead paint and horsehair mattresses, naked from the waist down. And they flop from one crib to the other and they cover themselves in their own waste and other people's. It was vile.
Philip:And this wee face looked at me and the Lord said, that's your son, clear as I'm talking to you. So I got my way down to the cribs and picked him up and I said, look, I don't know who you are or where you come from, but I promise you I'll not rest until I come back and get you. And I did. It took me a year to get him out.
Philip:But in the year I was there, waiting, back and forth every few weeks, I went back all the way from here, all the way to Europe, to this God-forsaken place called Romania. And in the year that passed, I fixed all the toilets — no toilets, swab and toilets — and the roof was leaking and the beds, I replaced all the beds. And literally God captured my heart. It was ridiculous. And that began an adventure that we've been going on for 35 years now.
Philip:We have homes in a place called Moldova, in a city called Chisinau. We've got a village of homes. It was built for rich folks to live beside that lake that you're looking at right now. And they poisoned the lake with chlorine to kill algae, and that whole project died and they sat unfinished for nine years, falling apart. And we bought the village, fixed all the houses up. And today it is packed with young boys and girls that were destined to be trafficked. A trafficker getting one of these girls through a fake promise of a fake job — if they get them, they'll earn $300,000 a year for their captor.
Philip:And we just don't think that's right. And so these homes that we have, we put them back in school, share the gospel with them, and these kids are now helping other people and are missionaries. It's the most amazing thing. We also have a home — seven years ago, I was coming back from Moldova and I learned from an immigration officer in Atlanta that the kids — they intercepted a container with 38 girls from Moldova shipped from Ukraine. So we opened a house in Ukraine and it's having great success also. And one of the girls in our Ukraine house is called Victoria. And this is her story. Watch this.
Victoria:My name is Vika and I am from Ukraine. When I was just four years old, my father abandoned us, leaving my mother to struggle and provide for our family on her own. Years went by and our situation only grew more desperate. We were poor, living in a small rundown apartment with little to no resources. It was a difficult time filled with uncertainty.
Victoria:But then a miracle happened. My stepfather came into our lives and he was everything my real father was not. For the first time in my life, I felt safe and secure, knowing that I had someone who would always be there for me. However, fate had other plans for my family.
Victoria:The war started. My stepfather and my brother went to defend their country in a hot zone. My heart was heavy with worry and fear as I watched them go, not knowing if I would ever see them again. Every day I wonder if they will be okay, if they will survive, if they will call or message me tomorrow. It's so scary and terrifying for me to even think about what could happen to them.
Victoria:The war has destroyed so much and left us with nothing but uncertainty. The world around me seems to blur into a haze of fear and anxiety. But then something happened that changed everything. I found safety and hope through the family of the Orphan's Hands. I heard about this organization from a girl who has been here for two years now. She told me about all the amazing things they do to help other girls and boys like me.
Victoria:At first I didn't believe it, but now I am grateful for all the support I have found here. This organization has provided me with a loving home, surrounded by nine other girls who share my pain and my struggles. We support each other and encourage each other to dream big and never give up. It's a place where I can study, grow, and build my future without the fear of what tomorrow may bring.
Victoria:The war may have taken much from us, but it has also given me a gift. It has taught me to cherish every moment and never take anything for granted. It has shown me that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. Thank you.
Philip:Miracle stories from young kids that had no hope. No hope. Not only imagine being abandoned by a father, then finding a stepdad who loved her, and then he's now gone with her brother into this horrendous war that's taking place. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, even more Russian soldiers, died in this war. It's unbelievable.
Philip:And we are right in the middle of it. Many times they are waking out of the bed with the sirens and the thunder of missiles from Russia. And Victoria is a testimony of grace. We are about to take 25 more kids. In fact, we are at this moment, as I speak — I got a bunch of snapshots yesterday from the different homes that we have, and the kids coming in for the first time in their lives. They come to us, most of them with the clothes on their back.
Philip:And the very first thing we do, we have a welcome party. And my wife Chrissy over here makes great big Rubbermaid tubs. And in the tub is a wardrobe of all the clothes they'll need, winter and summer clothes. And here are some of the snapshots of them just opening those tubs up. And they have a welcome home. The kids that are already there — I call them my old horses, 'cause they know how we run and what we do — they take the new kids and kind of guide them along.
Philip:And our original girls have a welcome home party for these kids that have never been loved, never been cared for. And we need your help. All of this is done by a miraculous way of working it. And that is everything. All these homes, all the vans that we drive, all the school education payments we make, all the dentists and doctors — all of it is supported and sponsored by people giving a dollar a day.
Philip:All of that. If I were to say to you, I can save these girls from trafficking, we can build new houses, we can do this outreach, and I can say we can do all of that for $1 a day, most all of you would say, wow, that's amazing. Well, that's exactly what we do every single day. This morning when dawn broke in Moldova and in Ukraine, dozens and dozens of these kids sit at breakfast time because someone like you gives a dollar a day.
Philip:Please help us. If you'd like to help us, you can write. It's very simple. It's either Daily Faith or the Orphan's Hands, PO Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee 37716. You can also call our 800 number: 833-Daily-Faith. Or you can go to dailyfaith.tv. Be a part of the answer.
Philip:Don't curse the darkness. I know we're living in terrible times. I know if you wanna sit and look at the dark things, it'll never end. But I choose to believe God that we are about to see a great outbreak of the Holy Ghost around the world. I choose to believe that God is supreme in our circumstance, and if I act and trust him and give and be a part of the answer for these kids — you may have kids of your own that are going to hell in a handbasket, grandkids that you're praying for. Why don't you sow a seed into this fertile good ground and say, listen, I wanna make a way for Victoria to continue there, or all the other kids that are coming in. And if you can, it will change your life, I promise you, as well as changing theirs. So please let the Lord lead you and we look forward to hearing from you.
Philip:This book — just by holding it in my hand, I know that the content of it is important for your world. Juan Martinez is pastor of Grace Rap Church in Spring, Texas, I believe. Is that right? And he has written this book and I believe that he's gonna speak life into your heart today. Juan, it is wonderful to have you with us on Daily Faith today. I just know that God is speaking through you today to our viewers. Tell us what God's been dealing with you about.
Juan Martinez:Let me tell you something, Philip — just watching everything you guys are doing is just exactly what this book is about. That's crazy. I think we have to honestly look at the scriptures to talk about even where we're at today. When you think about it, you see God always having to restart because people had unbelief. When Jesus said he came to set the captives free, he wasn't talking about literally going into a physical building and just opening the door of the local jail and letting everybody out. What holds us captive is the lie.
Physical vs. Spiritual Incarceration
Juan Martinez:And what you guys are doing is just unbelievable, because we know that new experiences deal with deeply rooted issues. You guys are giving those girls a new experience, which is helping to deal with everything they've believed before — their false beliefs, all of those things. So I think that's incredible.
Philip:Well, I just know the power of an open door in prison. I've watched this for over 35 years now. And to look into a face that has no hope, has never had a kind word, never been hugged, never been spoken nicely to, and to tell them God knows you, he knows your name and you're not a mistake — our motto is, if you are born, God has a plan. And to watch the revelation of this, and the prison, the chains of orphanhood and poverty and abuse fall away, and these amazing kids that are now doctors and lawyers and police officers and all kinds of incredible things, by the power of saying you can be free from your prison.
Philip:And there are folk watching just now, Juan, I know this, that are sitting in a nice house but they're just as bound and just as much in a prison as these kids that are orphans.
Juan Martinez:All day long. When people see the book and they see Prison Break and they know my story — I have a little background, obviously. I tell people I've done 10 years of physical prison and 23 years of the bars that I've placed around my heart. When they hear the story, they go, oh, this book is about your life in prison. And I go, no, no, no. When I go speak to the guys in prison — I have a prison ministry — but it's out here I'm setting the captives free. When I go to the prisons, it's just a great place to go fishing. It's a pond that's already filled with people.
Unbelief Keeps the Body of Christ Bound
Juan Martinez:So I always tell them, look, you think that when you walk out the door, or when you walk out of that relationship, or when you walk out of that job, whatever you're struggling with, you think that when you walk out of that, you're gonna be free. I tell them, you were incarcerated before you got incarcerated. In other words, you were already locked up in here. And that's why you keep doing the same thing. When I ask them, hey, how many times have you guys been incarcerated more than once, 90% of the room lift their hand.
Juan Martinez:The Lord spoke to me last week. He said, that's how the body of Christ is. We keep — we talk about the children of Israel. Oh my goodness, an 11-day journey took 40 years. He's like, no, you guys are doing that now. Same thing. There are so many people dealing with unbelief. Remember, Jesus came to testify of the truth. Now let me tell you what's beautiful about this, because there's a whole lot of us where we talk about God being omnipresent and omnipotent and all these things that we're excited about, but yet we don't follow his truth. We don't deny ourselves. We rather choose what we think is right.
Juan Martinez:I tell the guys in there, I go, hey, you are a game. So I want you to think about this. I want you to think about a time in your life — 'cause you don't have to be in physical prison. There are more people out here. This book is about the people out here that are incarcerated. Because I became a pastor, started traveling the land, preaching the gospel, and I realized that, man, there's a bunch of people that sound like the people that are in prison. I wonder what it would be like on the other side of the gate. I can't wait till my marriage gets better. I can't wait.
Juan Martinez:And I'm thinking, all prisons — the difference is, over there they actually gotta wait for somebody to open the door with a key. Out here, Jesus has already done the finished work at the cross. We have lost sight of the cross. We think resurrection is in April. Resurrection is today — the outpouring of the Spirit, the immortal body. That's today. We keep waiting for an event. The event happened already.
Fruit of the Spirit as Visible Truth
Juan Martinez:When people start complaining about, oh, Easter last year they were talking about trans visibility — I'm like, the world's acting like the world. My concern is, if we had fruit on our tree that was visible — love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, and self-control, visible fruit — then the world, we would not have to worry about that, because they would be like, our fruit is good.
Juan Martinez:See, I'm Puerto Rican and I grew up in a house where my parents had plastic fruit. They never really had the real fruit. They had either plastic fruit or porcelain fruit. And when I got married and my wife brought all this real fruit out, I was like, man, I get to eat this. When we exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, the fruit is never really for you, even though you benefit from it. But the fruit — when you look at a tree and you see the fruit, the fruit is really for other people to eat from it, so that they can taste and see that the Lord is good.
Juan Martinez:And if we want to shut the mouths of the liar, then we gotta show that the truth is real. So we don't have enough people believing the truth and manifesting it.
Philip:We do not have enough folk actually manifesting the truth.
Juan Martinez:Absolutely. The fruit that your mom had — and my mom in Scotland also had plastic fruit.
Philip:That is the fruit. It's the fruit. Not the image of the fruit.
Juan Martinez:That plastic fruit — when my mom moved up from plastic to porcelain fruit, I remember growing up it got shiny and it looked really good, unless you chipped it. So even the manufacturers started getting better. So you could wear the T-shirt, you could be at all the conferences, you could be like the woman who was bent, going to church for 17 years. But until you encounter Jesus Christ, the one who would set you free, you're never gonna experience a prison break.
Knowing Jesus vs. Knowing About Him
Juan Martinez:I like to say, deliverance at its finest is when God's truth meets your lie and they have a cataclysmic collision. That's what sets you free. We gotta know the truth, continuing in his word. Because you could — a lot of people say you know of Jesus. We've heard that a lot. But I tell people, look, a lot of people know of the word. They don't know the word as truth. They haven't become one with the word.
Juan Martinez:So we say stuff like, Jesus said, it is written, and you defeat the enemy. I said, yeah, but there was another part to that. God's just been talking to me about this. He did quote Deuteronomy 8. He said, turn the stone into bread. He said, man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. That's beautiful. But not only did he say it is written, he actually didn't turn the stone into bread. In other words, he lived out the thoughts of God. He just didn't quote it.
Juan Martinez:We're like, it is written, but we would actually turn the stone into bread. We do the opposite of what scripture says we do, which then means you're not seeing a full manifestation.
Philip:Oh my goodness. You've just opened up a subject that we could spend a month on. There are people watching just now that are in prisons — prisons of doubts and fears and the threats of the enemy, the accuser of the brethren. And your book addresses these things. Tell us some of the points. And I want you to — if you're watching this program and you know someone that's going through a prison of fear and self-doubt and all these things that the devil can use to tie us down and shackle us down — tell us, Juan, how does this book address the life and death issues? I need help to get out of prison. Tell me how to do it.
Studying Scripture Without Meditating
Juan Martinez:You know, I love Psalm 139, when David says, search me, O Lord. Check every little part of me. He says, test me, check all of my anxious cares. It says, see if there's any path of pain I'm walking in, and lead me back. In other words, my belief drives my behavior. I tell people all the time, this book — there's nothing new in there. It's Jesus. And what I'm trying to convey to the people is that I believe we're not listening. We have ears, but we're doing the same thing as in Jesus's time. He over and over said — so this book, what I wanna get you to do is to listen.
Juan Martinez:So we have scripture in there. I try to take deep things and make them simple. Then there's some active listening that you have to do, some prayer prompts. Why? Because we've been studying, but we don't meditate.
Philip:Whoa, whoa, whoa. Say that again.
Juan Martinez:We have been studying to get head knowledge. We're puffed up, everybody, but we're not tapping into that secret place. Mary said one thing is necessary. That's actually the whole goal — for you to sit.
Mary's One Necessary Thing — Luke 10:42
Juan Martinez:Maybe you used to do this and you don't do this anymore and you've gone back into bondage. This is gonna break you free. Or maybe you've never encountered Jesus and you've been going to church and you have churchianity but you have no Christianity. And you're gonna have this collision course. Mary said one thing — think about Luke 10:42. She says one thing. I've been chewing on this, Philip, I've been chewing on this for some time now. And I said, man, she said one thing. Why do we think it's 30 things and 50 things and a hundred things? One thing is necessary. And it says she picked the good part.
Juan Martinez:My question to you is, do you know what that one thing is? Have you chosen the good part? It says that when you choose the good part, it will never be taken away from you. We study, study, and study. It does say study to show yourself approved. But if you look at Hebrews 11, the way we're approved is by our faith. We study to know him.
Juan Martinez:Now, I just got my doctorate and I think I just hung up the thing a few days ago. I got it like last September, but I did that so that others can eat of the tree and say, man, if that guy did it, then we can too. It is only to know him. Everything is to know him. Only one thing. And that's what this book is about. Every single day is pointing you to what? That one thing.
Juan Martinez:As a matter of fact, the book has two bonus chapters. One is on prayer and one is on fasting. Because we pray — I'm Hispanic so I can say this — but we pray as if God is a Mexican piñata. We're just gonna write our whole list out and we're gonna start beating this thing until the candy falls out. That is not what prayer is about.
Prayer as Bringing Heaven to Earth
Juan Martinez:It doesn't — until line four, four, and in line four he's not asking for stuff. He actually says that he already knows what we need. So our prayer is about bringing the kingdom of heaven from heaven to the earth. That is it. That is the only thing prayer is about. So this whole thing has promptings, daily readings.
Juan Martinez:I had a guy the other day, he said, man, I've been reading this and it's so good. I'm on chapter five. I go, you're doing it wrong. Slow down. Be still, meditate, chew on it, digest it. And this older lady told me the other day — I don't know her, but she posted on social media. She said, I've been on chapter three for like three days.
Juan Martinez:She's an elderly lady. She said, I'm experiencing healing. Because she hasn't left the chapter. She's been meditating on the word. And that's what's making her successful. It's not stuffing yourself with knowledge or how fast you can get through it. Taking your time.
Philip:Let me tell you something. I'm listening to you just now, and who you are is manifesting, and your walk and your relationship with Jesus is manifesting much louder than the words you're talking. And I know folk watching just now are being challenged by the Holy Ghost. This is your day of deliverance. This is your day.
Philip:Listen, the two guys that left Jerusalem to walk to Emmaus — do you know the day that they quit? Do you know the day they quit? It was resurrection day. Don't quit on your resurrection day. This is the day that God has appointed. Listen to what Juan's talking about. This is your day of deliverance.
Slow Meditation Produces Healing
Philip:Jesus said to the woman with the issue of blood, who touched me? She did something. And getting this book may be the thing that breaks open the chains that have been holding you down and your family down and your lineage down. And I want you to get this book, Prison Break. You can get it on charismashop.com, you can get it on amazon.com, or you can go directly to Juan — and I think that's the best way, because I want you to make contact with this man — juanmartinez.tv. It's on the screen. And I want you to get this book and put it in your hands. Share it with your friends or buy one for your friends.
Philip:Juan, thank you so much for being with us today. I think we'll be seeing you again on Daily Faith, because you are anointed of the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah.
Juan Martinez:Thank you. I'm glad I've met you.
Philip:Thank you for watching Daily Faith. All you do, we love you. See you again. Bye-bye.
For over 25 years, the Cameron family has been changing the lives of orphans in Romania and Moldova — from providing running water, flushing toilets, and clean wells, to coal for heat, new windows, as well as food and clothing. They champion the physical needs of the orphans in these broken and desolate countries. Many of Moldova's orphans are saved from the horrors of trafficking through homes founded by the Camerons. And in the process, orphans become daughters and sons. They come to know their heavenly Father and are forever changed by the love of Jesus.
God helped the Camerons lift these amazing young men and women out of darkness. Now, no longer orphans, they want to return and invade that very same darkness with the light of Jesus Christ. The Orphan's Hands equips these daughters and sons to become missionaries. Your monthly gift of $31 will allow us to rescue and take in more girls and boys, saving them from the hell of human trafficking. Your monthly partnership will allow us to care for those in the Orphan's Hands homes in Moldova and Ukraine.
If you want to join Philip and Chrissy in taking care of these precious young people, please contact us today by calling 833-Daily-Faith. You can also give by going online to www.dailyfaith.tv, or by writing to PO Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee 37716. So many lives depend on what we do. Thank you for loving the lost.
Common questions
What does Juan Martinez mean when he says people are 'incarcerated before they got incarcerated'?
Juan explains that the real prison is internal — the false beliefs and lies we hold in our minds and hearts. He points out that when he asks men in prison how many have been locked up more than once, 90% raise their hands, which he says proves that walking out of a physical prison doesn't set you free if you haven't dealt with what's going on inside.
What is Juan Martinez's book 'Prison Break' actually about — is it about his time in physical prison?
While Juan did serve 10 years in physical prison, he says the book is really aimed at people on the outside. He spent 23 more years imprisoned by the 'bars he placed around his own heart,' and after becoming a pastor he realized that people in everyday life sound just like the inmates he ministers to — always waiting for circumstances to change before they feel free.
What does Juan say is the key to experiencing a real 'prison break' spiritually?
Juan says true deliverance happens when 'God's truth meets your lie and they have a cataclysmic collision.' He stresses that it's not enough to quote scripture — Jesus didn't just say 'it is written,' he actually lived out the truth of it. The book is designed to slow readers down into meditation and prayer so they move from head knowledge to genuinely knowing and living the Word.
How is the 'Prison Break' book structured, and how does Juan say readers should use it?
The book includes scripture, simplified teaching, prayer prompts, and active listening exercises, plus two bonus chapters on prayer and fasting. Juan is emphatic that readers should go slowly — he told one man who was already on chapter five that he was 'doing it wrong.' He points to an elderly woman who spent three days on a single chapter meditating on it and reported experiencing healing as the ideal example.
What does Juan say the fruit of the Spirit is really for, and why does it matter to the church today?
Juan argues that the fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, and self-control — is primarily for other people to 'eat from,' not just for the believer's own benefit. He uses the image of his mother's plastic fruit to illustrate how many Christians display a convincing imitation of faith without the real thing, and says that if the church showed genuine, visible fruit, the world's attacks would lose their power.
