Daily Faith with Philip Cameron: Special Guest Gary Taylor

About this episode

Pastor and author Gary Taylor joins Philip Cameron to unpack the message of his book Press On Regardless: Pursuing Wholeness after Brokenness — a raw, personal account of finding healing and renewed purpose after devastating loss. Gary shares how a painful divorce at age 54 left him feeling like "everything was over," and how a couple in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who poured into him night after night with the words "God's not through with you," became the catalyst for a long but genuine recovery. Drawing on Luke 4 and Isaiah 61, Gary explains that emotional healing was a core part of Christ's earthly assignment — "He sent me to heal the broken hearted" — and points to Psalm 147:3 and Romans 15:13 as anchors for anyone whose hope has run dry. He also shares the moment the Holy Spirit quietly told him, "Your calling is still there. What has happened to you has not destroyed your calling." Writing the book itself, he says, became the final chapter of his own healing. Whether you are navigating a broken marriage, a ministry setback, or a season of despair, this conversation offers a scripturally grounded, story-driven case that recovery is real and it is not too late. Quotes worth sharing

The Holy Spirit spoke to me. Now, when he spoke to me, it wasn't some loud, boisterous voice. It was a calm, peaceful voice that said to me, your calling is still there. What has happened to you has not destroyed your calling. The calling is still there.

Gary Taylor

Hope deferred makes the heart sick. When you don't have hope, it just destroys everything. You can't see past today. You can't see beyond tomorrow. There's nothing to live for without hope. And God is a God of hope.

Gary Taylor

When I would've lost heart, when I would've given up, when I would've lost hope — unless I believed I would see the goodness of God in the land of the living. David said, if I had given up, I'd never have gotten to the land of the living. I'd never have seen the blessing of God. And I wanna say to somebody right now, it's too soon to give up. Don't quit now. You've come too far. God hadn't brought you this far just to bring you this far. He's gonna take you on.

What's Discussed

Pastor Gary Taylor, author of Press On Regardless: Pursuing Wholeness after Brokenness (Resurgence Publishing), shares how a devastating divorce at age 54 shattered his world and launched an unexpected healing journey. Referencing Luke 4, Isaiah 61, Psalm 147:3, Psalm 27:13, and Romans 15:13, Gary makes the case that emotional healing was central to Christ's mission. A couple in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ministered to him daily until hope returned. Years later, a Holy Spirit prompting led him to write a book he had never planned — a process that completed his own healing. His core message: your calling is still intact, and it is never too soon to press on.

Intro

Philip:Hey, my friend. Welcome to Daily Faith Today. My name is Philip Cameron, and if only you knew all of the shenanigans that goes on before you go on TV. We are changing screens and — it's so funny. And we sit here, it reminds me of a duck, you know, on the top of the water. It's all smooth, but under the water it's kicking like crazy. I'm glad you're here.
Philip:We have got a tremendous program today. I've got a dear friend Gary Taylor with me, and he's written a book entitled Press On Regardless. And boy, is this book needed in the day we're living. He is gonna be sharing — this man has had decades of pastoral ministry and incredible experience in the Lord. And I'm so pleased he joined with us today. He came to a local church that I attended regularly a few Sundays ago and blessed me immensely.
Philip:We got a chance to talk for a few moments after the program, and so he's gonna be with me. We're gonna have a great time. I want you to know something today. Listen to me. God is in control of your circumstance. No storm you're going through is ever going to last forever. I come from the northeast of Scotland. If you wonder where I'm from, I'm Scottish, on the northeast corner, a wee town where I was born called Peterhead, Scotland. It is right out on the most northeasterly point.
Philip:Above us is the North Sea. To the east of us is the North Sea. To the south of us is the North Sea. We are two thirds surrounded by one of the stormiest seas in the world. The North Sea is a shallow body of water, so storms whip up and it's an insane place in the wintertime when the storm — it can be pretty insane in the summertime as well. And I've watched — there's a rock just off our coast called Scary Rock. It's been there for eons, and I've watched that rock completely disappear under the storm.
Philip:I mean, gone — not even the waves crashing against it, but the waves, just the body of water so high that the Scary Rock disappears. And you'll think, wow, looking at it, you think, well, that's the end. No. After a few days, the storm abates, and guess what comes back up to the water? Scary Rock. And all it's had is a good clean, because seagulls use it as a perch, and it's not a very sanitized place, if you know what I mean. And the storm comes and it cleans up all the garbage and all the muck from birds that they leave behind.
Philip:And I'm going to tell you something — the Scary Rock survives the storms. And so are you. You are your very own Scary Rock today. And all the storm and all the junk and all the garbage the devil's been dumping on you — and you're thinking, well, I'm in the storm and I'm never gonna survive. Yes, you will. There is never a storm that doesn't blow itself out. I didn't mean to talk about this today, but I know someone's watching and you are in a pickle and you're thinking, oh my Lord, this is going to be the end.
Philip:No, it's not. All that God uses these moments for is new beginnings. God has a plan for your life. He loves you with a love — I've got nine grandbabies, and our latest one is Annabelle. And she is just the most delicious. We think she owes me nothing whatsoever. She barely takes any notice of me. She'll give me the odd smile if I act like a clown, and she'll smile. But I'll tell you what, she has no concept of how many eyes are watching her all the time, how many ears are listening for her cry.
Philip:She was in the car with us yesterday. We were at Long John Silver's — my wife and I and Andrew and Yemy and Annabelle. And we thought she'd kind of made a mess in her diaper. It didn't devalue her to us at all. We just loved her all the more and changed her diaper and kept on going. And I could say the same for you. God doesn't look at you according to the diaper. He looks at you according to how much he loves you — a love that will never let you go.
Philip:So I want you to know something — that you turned this program on today for a purpose. God wants to encourage you through my friend today to let you know that even though you're going through the storm, you're gonna end up coming out the other side. So I'm delighted. If you like the program, hit Like. If you wanna share it with your friends, do that as well. There's a notification bell that you can click so when we come on the air, it'll ding and you'll know we're here. And then you can also watch us on YouTube. It's Daily Faith — it's youtube.com/dailyfaith.
Philip:And all of the programs we have are there. And I promise you, there's no circumstance you're going through that we haven't talked about here on Daily Faith. And we just want to let you know that you are loved. If no one's told you today, I want to tell you that God loves you and that we love you and you are important. You're not just a wee person living in a world. Wherever you are, God has a plan for your life. He's redeemed you, the Bible says, and He's called you by your name and you belong to Him. And if you don't feel you belong to anybody else, it doesn't matter, as long as you belong to God. That's all that counts. So I'm just delighted to have you with us. I'm glad you're here. Welcome to Daily Faith.
Philip:Welcome to Daily Faith, my friend. My name is Philip Cameron, and I am so glad to have you with us today. You are here because God wants you to listen to what he's going to share for you. I'm amazed how the Lord can engineer stuff. I had a dear friend many years ago called Arthur — a great man of God. And he said to me one day, he says, Philip, you can't fix the fixer. You can't fix the fixer. God is the fixer. And he'll fix things. He'll get you to where — if he's gonna put you in the belly of a whale, he'll get you in the belly of a whale to get you back to Nineveh.
Philip:And so you might be going through circumstances now and you're thinking, why me? I'll tell you why — because God's moving you from one place to the other. The children of Israel were in the stubble fields because Pharaoh had got mad at them. And they said, make the same amount of bricks, but you're only using stubble, you're not gonna use straw. And these guys are out there — have you ever been in a field of stubble? It's like walking on nails. And these guys are on their knees cutting this little six inches that was left of the harvest, and their wives are back home getting beaten and whipped by the taskmasters as they're making the bricks.
Philip:And suddenly this crazy guy that showed up after being gone for 40 years, who had said, there's a place that's our own place, we're gonna be our own nation — and they all said, you're crazy. How? Who told you this? Oh, a bush told me this. A what? A bush. It was burning and it spoke to me and it told me to take off my shoes. Sure. Okay, fine. It's called heat stroke where we come from. But God got them in a situation where they were willing to go. And you might be in the stubble field, but there's a feeling there's a move coming soon in your life.
Philip:We have had a mission work for 35 years. 35 years ago, I adopted a wee boy in an orphanage in Timișoara, Romania. Little did I know that when I made a commitment to that wee boy that I was coming back to see him and I would never forget him, that I was making a commitment to hundreds, thousands of young kids whose parents had dumped them in orphanages. And for the last 35 years, God's helped us help these kids. And one of the great needs in the country of Moldova and Ukraine is trafficking. When a girl turns 16, she's put on the street from the orphanage, and she ends up being offered a bogus job, a fake job by somebody, and she gets in a car and she's gone. And they use them 30 to 50 times a day until they kill them.
Philip:We've got a gorgeous place — and their houses are stunning. It was built for rich people on the largest lake in Moldova. The village is called Vatra. That's it right there. You're watching it this minute. And they come to us and we put them back in school and we share the gospel with them. And these orphans are turning into sons and daughters and missionaries. And so they're out all the time witnessing, evangelizing. They care for widows. They care for broken families. They feed people. It's amazing. They go to homeless shelters.
Philip:And when this horrible war in Ukraine broke out, they were at the border when 800,000 refugees ran away from the Russian soldiers. And these kids became missionaries and shared the love of God. And one of them is called Emma. So every girl you see in this video is one of our young ladies. And everyone you see — if a trafficker could get them, they would earn the trafficker $300,000. Every girl you see, if a trafficker catches them, it's $300,000. Emma is her name. Her brother just competed in the Olympic Games, and she shares her testimony with you right now. Watch this.
My name is Emma. And I was born in a family with many children. My father was drinking a lot, and this made him aggressive. I remember sitting in our room with my siblings and we couldn't go to the kitchen because my father was there, and we would go to sleep hungry.
I remember one evening I was at home alone with my younger brother and we were getting ready for bed when my mother came. She told us to quickly leave. I didn't understand why. I was in my pajamas. I remember asking her why. She didn't know how to answer. We went to church and slept there because my father was drunk and wanted to beat us. My mother wanted to protect us, so we slept on the chairs.
And the next night at some friend's house. I remember my father was pushing us sometimes and was saying bad things to my mother. I couldn't do anything to help. And in order for my mom to avoid that, she would take us and lock ourselves in one room and stay there with us. If he was drinking one night, that meant a week for us to go into hiding.
I became very shy. I was scared to talk to others. I never had a hug from my father. I have no idea what that is like. I saw that in others and I always wanted that, but I never had the chance to have that. He only called me once, and then he told me that he had mistakenly called me.
I watched others becoming successful and I saw that they can. So I asked myself, why can't I do that? Maybe I am not as privileged as they are, but this does not discourage me to work hard and get somewhere far in life. I would like to thank those who are helping me to fulfill my dream and continue my studies — economic studies. And I would like to encourage others to work hard and not be overwhelmed by your past.
Philip:Never had a hug from her dad. I never knew how that would feel. It's amazing. Emma is a miracle. She came to us broken. These kids come to us in the clothes on their backs and come from abuse. And in particular, her story — she didn't even mention this, but she was deaf until she was five years of age. And she's just lived a horrendous life. And they come to us — in fact, we've got 25 new girls coming in in the next few days. 25 new girls. They come with all the baggage of abuse and pain and neglect and never being loved and never being held.
Philip:And they come to us and we tell them, if you're born, God has a plan. You're not a mistake. They may say you're a mistake, but God doesn't. You're not a mistake. And the miracle of redemption that these kids experience is amazing. We had a pastor come over the other day — a few months ago rather — to Moldova. And he said to me, he says, Philip, I've never seen anything like this before in my life. And what's happening is we take these kids in broken and we build them up to be our equal. So every one of the house parents at Vatra Village were once orphans themselves.
Philip:We rescue most of the girls and guys that are now married with wives and kids. We rescue them. So this is the second generation of kids. And it all takes place because someone just like you gives a dollar a day. It's crazy. A dollar a day has changed Emma's life, has changed her future. The baby she has, the husband she'll marry — her whole destiny has been changed by someone like you giving a dollar a day. I'm asking if you could help me right now. We've got 25 new kids coming in and your gift today would make an amazing difference.
Philip:You can give a one-time gift. Our business folks watching just now, they could give a capital gift. Do you know it costs us about $3,000 a month just for their bus tickets to send them to school across all the different schools across the city? Everything — they come to us having never been to the doctor, they've never seen a dentist, they've never been to an optician. And they are literally our responsibility — the fees for the school. And we just think it's a worthy investment in the kingdom of God. Better to come and hear the gospel than be caught with a trafficker.
Philip:If they're worth $300,000 a year each to the trafficker, don't you think they should be worth $30 a month to the church? And that's what I'm asking you. This is really simple. It's just the Orphan's Hands, or Daily Faith, PO Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee 37716. And you can also go on dailyfaith.tv — there's a giving page right there. You can give there. And also we have an 800 number — 833 — and then just type out Daily Faith on your keyboard, on your phone, and a real live person will come and talk to you. You can make a difference today. Today.
Philip:And as you're watching, we have a home also in Ukraine — the most beautiful young women in Ukraine. And they spent last year in Moldova because we had to get them out of Ukraine, and then we had to put them back to Ukraine for their education. And we live every day waiting. In fact, we just supplied a van there — a passenger van — to get them out in an emergency back to Moldova. So we just need you to help us. We cannot do this by ourselves. And frankly, the more support we can get, the more kids we can reach. And you have the power of life and death in your hand right now. We just know that you can be a part with us. Please do that if you would. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know.
Philip:I've got a new friend I wanted to introduce you to today. He's gonna bless you. His name is Gary Taylor. He is responsible for Gary Taylor Ministries and he lives in Daphne, Alabama. And he came to our church just a few weeks ago and preached and impacted me and impacted the church. And I said to my son Andrew, I says, Andrew, try and get this man on — I know he is busy, but try and get him on. He's written a book entitled Press On Regardless. And I think it's autobiographical — another word this Scotsman can't say properly. But Gary, I'm delighted to have you with me today. How are you doing?

Gary Taylor's Story of Brokenness at 54

Gary Taylor:I'm doing great. Thank you so much for allowing me to come and be with you today. I've looked forward to it now for a couple of weeks and I'm just so thankful for you. And can I just share with you for just a moment how much I love and appreciate the passion and commitment that you have to reach out and bless and give people hope? And that's what your ministry is all about — is giving people hope. And I just pray that every viewer will be supportive of your vision to reach out and give people hope.
Philip:I didn't invite you on the program to say all those kind things about us, but I'm glad you did anyway. I appreciate it. I want the folks to watch this short video about the book you've written, and I think it'll help them catch up with us as to what we wanna talk about today. Watch this video.

Philip:So I'm holding this book in my hand and it's a tremendous story of battles and struggles. And I'm just so glad to have you with us, Gary. Give us a synopsis. Tell us what you went through to be able to write a book like this. Because I know enough about life, having been in the ministry for 55 years, that you've lived something to write a book like this. Tell us what happened.
Gary Taylor:Well, you know, what happened to me — the result of it was when I went to Luke chapter four. Jesus began his earthly ministry by going back to Nazareth where he grew up. And he went into the synagogue. And once he was in the synagogue, he was handed the scroll of scripture. And Jesus took time and he found Isaiah 61. And he read from Isaiah 61, which reads like this: the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted.

Fort Lauderdale Couple Restores His Hope

Gary Taylor:Now, we all know that when Christ came, his mission was to be the sacrificial lamb for our sins. He died for our sins. We also know that with his stripes we're healed, and that atonement that he gave on the cross included physical healing. But Christ reading from Isaiah 61 also let it be known that emotional healing was a part of his assignment. Listen to these words — he sent me to heal the brokenhearted. The Father sent Christ to heal the broken. That was a part of his assignment. His assignment was to heal the broken. I love Psalms 147, verse three, that says he heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds. These words became very valuable to me in a broken time.
Gary Taylor:My life was broken at age 54. I'd gone through a horrible divorce. It seemed like my world had ended. It seemed like my life was over and I was left broken. I was broken to the point I didn't know about tomorrow. I didn't know how I was going to make it. I didn't know what the future held. And walking through that brokenness and that pain and all the ramifications that came with that brokenness, God began a healing process — hallelujah — in me, when a couple that I did not know, had never met, invited me to their home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. And for weeks they poured into me every morning, every night, saying, God's not through with you. It's not over. God can pick you up and put you back together. God can heal you.

Recovery as a Process, Not an Instant Fix

Gary Taylor:And that began a healing process in me that took time. It didn't happen overnight, and it wasn't easy. You see, recovery takes time. It is not something that God always does instantly. It's not something that God always does immediately. Sometimes when you're in recovery, you've gotta understand there's a time element there — that God is working, and healing sometimes is a process. And God is taking you through that process. And then several years ago, Philip, I retired from pastoring. And I just thought, well, it's over now. I'm retired and I can just take it easy. I've got to the place in life, I deserve this. I don't have to pursue and persist. It is over.
Gary Taylor:And then the Lord put it in my spirit to write this book. Well, I'd never written a book before. I didn't know how to write a book. I had preached for years. I had passion, but I knew nothing about writing a book. And here's the thing about it, Philip — I tried to dismiss it. I tried to do away with it. It wouldn't go away. I couldn't dismiss it. And it took me several years to write this book, and this book came out of pain. This book right here came out of a lot of pain.

Holy Spirit Prompting to Write the Book

Gary Taylor:It was actually painful to write this book. It was actually painful to go back. But then once I got it done, I realized it was a part of my healing. It was a part of my healing — there were parts of it I didn't realize still existed. And then God used this to complete my healing in me.
Philip:What's exciting as well, Gary, is when you're going through this season, there's a guy called the accuser of the brethren. The devil can amplify and magnify the negative parts of your life. And whether it's a sickness or a failed marriage or whatever it is, he makes that so big and so all-encompassing that he takes away the vision of something bigger. When the two men were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus after Jesus had been crucified and had risen again, they walked eight miles downhill to Emmaus with Jesus talking to them. And they had no idea who he was, because the crisis they were in was bigger than the Christ that was walking beside them. And that's what the devil does. And what you're saying is that there's recovery, there is hope after the storm.

"Your Calling Is Still There" Moment

Philip:Someone's watching us. I know this, Gary — someone is watching us today and they are where you were, and they're thinking, well, I'm done. It's over. It's finished.
Gary Taylor:I remember, Philip, I was actually at my mother's home. I was staying with her. I was in a bedroom. I was crying. I was alone. I felt like everything was over. And the Holy Spirit spoke to me. Now, when he spoke to me, it wasn't some loud, boisterous voice. It was a calm, peaceful voice that said to me, your calling is still there. What has happened to you has not destroyed your calling. The calling is still there. From that moment on, I began to realize that my calling had not left. Now God may take me in another avenue, he may take me another direction, but the calling is still there.
Gary Taylor:And one thing I would like to do is encourage people who are hurting, because here's what I found out. When people are hurting, here's one thing they need — they need hope. They've got to have hope. And that's my prayer for this book, is that it gives hurting people hope. Matter of fact, this book is dedicated to wounded and broken people who need hope. Proverbs 13:12 — hope deferred makes the heart sick. When you don't have hope, it just destroys everything. You can't see past today. You can't see beyond tomorrow. There's nothing to live for without hope. And God is a God of hope. Romans chapter 15, verse 13 — he's the God of hope, the God that will allow the abundance of hope to flow through you by the Holy Spirit.

Hope as the Anchor for Hurting People

Gary Taylor:So you know what, Philip, today there may be people who are watching us right now. We don't know where they are. We don't know their name. But the Holy Spirit does. And the Holy Spirit knows exactly where they are. And the Holy Spirit can deposit hope in them today to dream again, believe again, rejoice again. And I'll bring something else — because you have hope doesn't mean your world is perfect. It doesn't mean everything's perfect. In the midst of imperfection and heartache and brokenness, the Lord can give you hope. So that's my prayer today, is that God would use this simple book that I put together — that was painful for me. And you know, sometimes, Philip, some of your greatest blessings come out of your greatest pain.
Philip:Absolutely. Oh, can I ever testify to that. And I'm just so aware right now, Gary — sharply aware — that someone is watching this program and you may have switched this thing on and you're thinking, God, if I don't hear a word from you, I'm going to quit. I'm gonna give it up. Listen to me. Look at me. Listen to me. God is not done with you yet. The sun is going to shine again. The storm you're in, the confusion — one day I took my kids to Niagara Falls in Canada. And we went on a boat called the Maid of the Mist. And this guy took us right up to the Niagara Falls, and it was like you are in the middle of the worst storm, and the water coming over us — we're soaked to the skin. And he backed the boat up 20 feet and the storm went away.
Philip:And what the devil wants to do is to hold you in the position of the storm, make you afraid. Fear is the devil's faith. And he tries to make you fear stuff. And I want you to know today that God loves you and He's never gonna give up on you. And you're called — as Gary's saying, you are called of God. And that call never leaves.
Gary Taylor:Never leaves. Never leaves. The love never ends and the call never leaves. Listen to this one scripture. And I put this scripture in the book when I dedicated this book to wounded and broken people. I put in Psalms 27:13. Here's what Psalms 27:13 says — by David. David said, when I would've lost heart, when I would've given up, when I would've lost hope — unless I believed I would see the goodness of God in the land of the living.

Psalm 27:13 — Too Soon to Give Up

For over 25 years, the Cameron family has been changing the lives of orphans in Romania and Moldova — from providing running water, flushing toilets, and clean wells, to coal for heat, new windows, as well as food and clothing. They champion the physical needs of the orphans in these broken and desolate countries. Many of Moldova's orphans are saved from the horrors of trafficking through homes founded by the Camerons. And in the process, orphans become daughters and sons. They come to know their heavenly Father and are forever changed by the love of Jesus.
God helped the Camerons lift these amazing young men and women out of darkness. Now no longer orphans, they want to return and invade that very same darkness with the light of Jesus Christ. The Orphan's Hands equips these daughters and sons to become missionaries. Your monthly gift of $31 will allow us to rescue and take in more girls and boys, saving them from the hell of human trafficking. Your monthly partnership will allow us to care for those in the Orphan's Hands homes in Moldova and Ukraine. A couple he had never met invited him to their home in Fort Lauderdale and spent weeks pouring into him, telling him God wasn't through with him — and that began a healing process that eventually led him to write the book.

Does Gary Taylor believe God heals emotional pain, not just physical sickness?

Yes — Gary points to Luke 4, where Jesus reads from Isaiah 61 and declares he was sent to heal the brokenhearted. Gary says emotional healing was a direct part of Christ's assignment, not just physical healing, and he also cites Psalm 147:3 — 'He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds' — as scripture that became personally vital to him in his broken season.

How long does Gary Taylor say recovery from brokenness takes?

Gary is clear that recovery is rarely instant — it takes time and is often a process. He says God is working through that process even when it doesn't feel like it, and he notes that writing the book itself was painful but turned out to be a final part of his own healing, surfacing wounds he didn't even realize were still there.

What does Gary Taylor say happened to his calling after his life fell apart?

While Gary was alone and crying at his mother's home, the Holy Spirit spoke to him in a calm, peaceful voice and told him his calling was still there — that what had happened to him had not destroyed it. That moment was the turning point where he began to believe God could still use him, even if in a different direction.

What is the main message Gary Taylor wants hurting people to take from his book?

Gary says the one thing hurting people desperately need is hope, and that's the entire prayer behind the book. He references Proverbs 13:12 — 'hope deferred makes the heart sick' — and says that without hope you can't see past today. His message is that God, as the God of hope (Romans 15:13), can deposit hope in people so they can dream again, believe again, and keep going.
