Fueled by Faith: Derek Draughon’s Journey from the Skies to Spirit-Led Living
About this episode
Derek Draughon, pastor and founder of Fuel Cast TV, joins Philip Cameron to unpack one of the Old Testament's most electrifying stories — the Gideon moment — and what it means for believers who feel like they're just getting by. Drawing from Judges 6:11, Derek paints a vivid picture of Gideon hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat to survive while surrounded by Midianite oppression. "You're hiding in a winepress," Derek says, "and you're just getting by — but you are in the place of abundance if you're in the kingdom of God."
Derek argues that God always moves toward His people first, pointing to John 4 and the woman at the well as evidence that the Holy Spirit seeks us out even in our lowest seasons. The conversation turns to the power of sacrifice — how Gideon's single act of offering unlocked divine provision and military victory — and how "half obedience is still disobedience." Derek shares his own four-month season without income and how it deepened his revelation that God is the true source of every need.
Practical and prophetic, this episode challenges listeners to stop settling for survival, write the vision down (Habakkuk 2:2), and step into full obedience. Find more from Derek at Fuel Cast TV.

“Everything turns when you bring a sacrifice to God. That is the key.”
“Half obedience is still disobedience. Kind of obeying is still disobedience. We have to obey the voice of God fully.”
What's Discussed
Pastor and Fuel Cast TV founder Derek Draughon joins Philip Cameron to explore the biblical account of Gideon (Judges 6:11) as a template for modern believers facing oppression and scarcity. Derek highlights that Gideon was hiding in a winepress — a symbol of abundance — while merely surviving, mirroring Christians who settle for less than kingdom provision. He emphasizes that God always initiates, citing John 4 and the woman at the well. The episode stresses that sacrifice precedes breakthrough, full obedience is non-negotiable, and Habakkuk 2:2 — writing the vision down — is a practical key to running with God's word. Derek also shares his personal testimony of four months without income and God's faithfulness throughout.
Yahweh’s angel came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. His son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.

Intro
Philip:Hey, welcome to Daily Faith Radio. My name is Philip Cameron, and I am delighted you are with us. We have got one of my best friends, a great man of God, with us. Derek Draughon is going to be speaking with you today about the Gideon moments of your life. God is setting you up.
Philip:You may think that everything is going wrong. Thus sayeth the Lord, "I am on your side." And God is going to see you through your difficulty, and he's going to send a Gideon moment into your world to transform you from being under oppression of the enemy into killing him. You need to take authority over the darkness of your life. God is for you. For goodness sake, listen to me. God is for you. And if God be for you, who can be against you?
Philip:In the last World War, tiny Britain fought against this monster, Nazi, across the English Channel. He had taken all of Europe, was 23 miles away across the English Channel. And one man stood up in faith and says, "We will fight on the beaches, we will fight on the landing grounds, we will fight in the fields. We will never surrender."
Philip:And he called in his war rooms — you can go and visit them today — where Winston Churchill spent the war in the war rooms. There was a booth, a room that many thought was just a toilet, and it wasn't. It was in that room, there was a phone. And when Churchill picked up that phone in London, it rang on the desk of Roosevelt in Washington, DC. He had a connection that was bigger than little Britain, and he kept on begging and asking, "Please help us. Please help us." And initially, America sent us lend-lease materials. And then one fateful day, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and a giant arose and said, "That's enough," and literally flattened the Germans and flattened the Japanese.
Philip:And listen to me, there's a giant in your life, and his name is God, Jehovah. And when he arises, his enemies are scattered. And I'm prophesying to you today that he is going to arise in your circumstance, and your enemies are going to be scattered in the name of Jesus.
Philip:Boy, we have got a show coming up. I want you to help me. Hit the share button if you can. Hit the remind me button, so every time Daily Faith comes on the air, you'll get a word. Our job here today and our calling is to undergird your faith, is to build you up in the most holy faith to fight against the enemies. And you can also go to — we're on YouTube — youtube.com/dailyfaith. And all of the programs we've done in the past are there.
Philip:I do a reel every few days, just a thought the Lord's given me that you can tune into that also. And dailyfaith.tv is like our home base for what we do. We do mission work — for those that don't know — for the last 35 years, we've done mission work in Eastern Europe. I adopted a wee boy in an orphanage in Timișoara, Romania, 35 years ago. And that's our passion and our heart. In fact, my daughter and son-in-law leave there in a couple of days. So we have got a great program. Don't go anywhere, because God has a rhema word for you in the name of Jesus. The battle isn't over. The battle is the Lord's, and he's going to rise in your circumstance. I'm delighted you're here today. Welcome to Daily Faith.
Philip:Welcome to Daily Faith. My name is Philip Cameron, and I am absolutely delighted you are with us today. God has a rhema for you. We live and exist by every word that proceedeth, that continually comes from the heart of God. Something changes. All it takes is one rhema word from God, and your circumstance changes. The Bible says when God arises, His enemies are scattered. That's your enemies. God's enemies are your enemies. Your enemies are God's enemies. And God has a plan for you that's bigger than you've ever conceived in your life.
Philip:"Eye has not seen," the Bible said, "ear hasn't heard, it hasn't even entered into the mind and heart of man the things that God has prepared for them that love Him." He's got a thing going on for you right now, and the devil's been trying to stop you and hinder you and cause you to fear. My earpiece has fallen off, I'm getting so excited here. If I stand out too far, someone might hurt me like they got Charlie Kirk.
Philip:I've got news for you, God's on your side. Better to die for Jesus than to die in a bed somewhere as an old man. As "Braveheart" said. Remember that scene from "Braveheart?" If you die, but how many of you would give every day from night to night, day for one thing, freedom? And God wants to set you free today.
Philip:I got a great friend with us. His name is Derek Draughon, a great man of God. He is the host of Fuel Cast TV. If you're looking for a way to minister to men, Derek is one of the guys that I would pick on first. He has really got some great stuff going on. We also have a mission work in Moldova. As I mentioned in a prequel to the program, my daughter, Melody, and her husband is leaving in two days, I believe, to go there. And there's a team coming from America, 11 people coming, and my daughter's going to go and host it.
Philip:And 35 years ago, I was sitting in my own world, totally just happy. I was on TV all the time on the national TV programs. I'd written a book that had sold 300,000 copies. Everything was great. And my dad called me, and he'd watched the BBC News about this country called Romania that this dictator had... Oh, it was horrendous. Anyway, he forced me to go. I didn't want to go, but he wanted me to come, so I ended up going.
Philip:And I walked into this room in this orphanage, and I saw this wee boy, and the Holy Spirit spoke and said, "That's your son." I had no idea, no clue, that what I was doing, I was getting set up by God for a lifetime of commitment. And I went up to this wee fella standing half-naked, covered in pus, covered in his own waste, and I picked him up and I said, "I don't know who you are, but I promise you this, I'm not going to quit until I make you my son."
Philip:Well, God blessed me. A year later, we adopted him. And in that year, we totally changed and transformed the orphanage, and I was hooked on caring for people. We were asked to go to a country called Moldova, which is right now in the middle, at the thick of things. They just had an election yesterday, and they voted towards the West, and we all think, "Oh, yay, they've turned their back on Russia." No, that's not necessarily a good thing because Russia will then say, "We are going to try to keep you." So we are in a great risk moment right now in Moldova.
Philip:We have a place, an amazing place called Vatra Village. It is a village of houses on the biggest lake in the whole country. And in there, we take young people, young girls primarily. One of our homes is a boys home, but primarily, poverty and the orphanage system has put young girls at incredible risk of being trafficked. Every girl you see right now is worth $300,000 a year to a trafficker. And we take them in, put them back in school, tell them, "If you're born, God has a plan."
Philip:And these kids, these amazing kids, are turning from orphans to sons and daughters, and from sons and daughters to missionaries. And these kids go out all through the summer, all through the winter, feeding people, bringing coal to widows' homes, fixing their homes up. All through the summer, they go to camps and lead hundreds of kids to Jesus, all because someone like you, like you, say, "I'll make a way for them." And for a dollar a day, this is what we do.
Philip:And just a couple of weeks ago, we took a whole bunch of new kids. Over 20 girls came into Vatra Village in one day, and they sent me this video. Watch this.
Philip:The power of mercy and grace. Most of these kids have never had a drawer to put their clothes in. The clothes they wear are hand-me-downs and cast-offs that they've somehow got. And they come to us broken, abused, abandoned, and they come to us — the first thing we have is a welcome home party. And my wife, Chrissy, personally makes every one of those big Tupperware tubs. And the girls that are in the house — I call them my old horses because they know the rules and how to gather the new kids in. And they have a party, and they'll spend a whole day going through these boxes, and they go up to the room and change and put a new outfit, and come back down again, and everyone claps and cheers. And we tell a heart that has nowhere to land and nowhere to have peace, "You're home now. You're okay."
Philip:And it's amazing what grace can do. In a few days' time, they start to smile from their heart, not just because they're getting something in a box. We give them things to go out in the villages and hand out. They give more stuff away in a day than they've ever seen in their lifetime. And by giving, their hearts are changed from orphans. It breaks the orphan spirit inside them because they're giving. We are growing. In fact, we've two new homes that we're in the middle of building and finishing that will take 50 more kids in.
Philip:Each one of these houses need 300 sponsors at a dollar a day. You can help me change a girl's life. Now, this isn't just a bowl of rice once a day. They come into our homes, we are responsible for their education, for their medical treatment. Many have never seen a doctor in their life. Many need glasses. Many need dental work. And we are responsible and pay for all of these things, including their education. It isn't cheap, but it's deep.
Philip:And what happens is we transform these kids' lives. In fact, my son, Andrew, was over a few months ago, and he was invited to go to the wedding of one of our kids, one of our girls. And he sat at a table, and every one of the kids at the table were graduates from Vatra Village, and some were there with their husbands and wives and their kids. And Andrew sat there amongst all these kids that had their lives transformed. You can help me change these kids' lives for a dollar a day, less than a Coke.
Philip:God has blessed you for this purpose. We're looking for people to help us build the new buildings and finish them out. A one-time gift of whatever amount — just tell us this is for the new buildings. It's in a place called Lungani. You'll never spell it. Just say they're for the new buildings, and we'll apply it right there. But I'm praying that God speaks to your heart today. A dollar a day won't change your world. It won't make you any poorer, I promise you. But a dollar a day will transform theirs for eternity.
Philip:You can contact us, Orphan's Hands, P.O. Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee. 25, it's really simple. Clinton, Tennessee 37716. The quickest way is just go to dailyfaith.tv. There's a giving page, and you can just click on Donate, and it'll take you to the place, and you can give. And you can also go to orphanshands.org. There's a lot of information, a lot of film, a lot of video there that you can sit and cry and boo-hoo with us as we watch grace and miracles take place. And we've also got an 800 number, 833-DAILYFAITH. 833-DAILYFAITH. And a real, live, honest-to-goodness person will pick up the phone and accept your gift on behalf of these kids. Let the Lord speak to you today to change someone's life. Do it right now, if you would.
Philip:My friend, Derek Draughon, is a great man of God. He pastors. He has a great ministry called Fuel Cast TV, and most importantly, he's been a great help to me in my life. Spoken life into me many times, and he's going to do the same for you today. Derek, I am delighted to have you on "Daily Faith," my friend. How are you doing?
Derek Draughon:I'm good. Man, it's always — I have to post a picture to social media every time we do this and say, "I love being on 'Daily Faith.'" Honestly, when we end this show, every time I get to be on, I get off encouraged. I want to come and have a word, but I usually leave here because you had a word, and I'm encouraged and strengthened.
Philip:Well, you — just I love you guys. Love what you're doing.
Philip:Every time you come here, you bring something from the heart of God. And I know today we're living in very uncertain times, Derek. We're living in the betwixt and between situation. Is a revival coming? We feel there's something stirring. This thing with Charlie Kirk, it woke up a whole nation, but the devil's working, and there's concern of wars and rumors of war, and everyone's in this terrible night of the soul kind of thing. And we need to know that God is on our side, that God's with us.
Gideon in the Winepress: Surviving vs. Thriving
Philip:And all you said to me — I said, "What's the Lord talking to you, Derek?" And you said, "Gideon." And my head just went, Gideon. Tell us what the Lord's been talking to you about.
Derek Draughon:Well, what I love about Gideon, and I've preached this many times, but one of my favorite things — I'll just read the scripture, Judges 6:11. "Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon, son of Joash, was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress, hiding the grain from the Midianites." "The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Mighty hero, or mighty warrior, the Lord is with you.'" And he tells him, "Go. Get up now and go save your people."
Derek Draughon:And this is sometimes the biggest thing that I like to preach out of this text, the fact that Gideon is in a winepress. He's hiding. He's threshing wheat. So the thing I like to preach a lot is back in that day, the winepress would've been a symbol of flourishing, of wealth. The winepress would've been a symbol of a great income. But he's hiding in there threshing wheat just to make a loaf of bread, which would be the symbol of just getting by and just making it.
Derek Draughon:And I think my word for the believer today, for the Christian, for the pastor, for the church, is that, bro, you're hiding in a winepress and you're just getting by. You are in the place of abundance if you're in the kingdom of God. But you're just getting by.
Derek Draughon:And I'm just going to tell you, Philip, you hit the nail on the head as I mentioned Gideon to you, and you said the first thing he did after this word from God is he went and he produced a sacrifice. And that dollar a day that you're talking about, that may be a sacrifice to some people. That may be the start. But listen to me, if you're a believer, if you're a child of God, if you're a pastor, if you're a church, you're in a place of abundance. Even if you feel like you're just getting by right now, you are in a place of abundance. The kingdom of God is not a place of just getting by. It is a place of abundance.
Derek Draughon:But it's like you said, Philip, the sacrifice has to come. We got to step up and say, "Okay, I got this little bit of money in savings, but I'm going to give it to Vatra Village," or, "I'm going to give it toward this new house that you guys are putting together for these people. I've got this little bit, but I'm going to step up and I'm going to make a sacrifice." And if you know the story of Gideon — I know we don't have a lot of time on this program — but if you know the story of Gideon, God takes him through it. God carries him step by step. He reduces the number of people helping him down to 300, because he wants them to know it's God's hand that's going to produce. God's going to do it.
God Always Moves Toward His People First
Derek Draughon:I think the biggest thing in this is that what we see in the life of Gideon is that we don't have to chase God down. God comes toward us. He sends an angel. He shows up in the moment and says, "Mighty warrior."
Philip:Isn't that crazy?
Derek Draughon:And the crazy thing, the reason why Gideon was in the winepress threshing wheat was because it wasn't the season of wine. He was hiding. If the Midianites came, the last place he would go and try to find him was in the winepress because there was no grapes at that time. He was working counter to nature, but God provides things even though it's not the right season, even though the grapes are not there, even though stuff's not working out the way you think it is. God's angel visiting you suddenly changes everything.
Derek Draughon:When he says, "Hold on. Wait a second." The angel calls him a mighty — well, in my Bible, obviously I'm a King James guy and you're all these modern guys, but in my Bible it says, "You're a mighty man of valor." A mighty man of valor. And he said, "Are you kidding me? I'm hiding in the winepress. I'm hiding for my life from these guys." But when the angel spoke to him, he says, "Hold on a second. Don't you leave." And he produced a kid. He produced a sacrifice.
Derek Draughon:And as the angel sat, he gave away — I'm sure he got up many times. The Bible tells us there was no donkeys, there was no cows, there was no cattle. The Midianites had stripped them, and right to the point of harvest, they would come and take their harvest from them. They were in dire straits. But the Bible says there's nothing in the land except one kid, and he sacrificed it to the Lord. And that's when the revelation that he was a mighty man of valor — everything turns when you bring a sacrifice to God. That is the key.
Derek's Season Without Income and God's Provision
Derek Draughon:And what I want people to understand, because I know people are going through tough times, I know there are hard moments, but I really want people to understand that God always comes towards us. There's so much conversation. And I get it. Man, I am a God chaser. And I pray, and I turn the worship on, and I break in crying moments in the Spirit of God. But John, chapter 4, the Bible says that He had to go through a town. Why? Because He knew there was a woman that was going to be at a well. And He sits there and He asks her for water. And what does He say to her? He says, "Woman, if you knew who I was, if you knew the gift of God, you would've asked me for water, and I would've given you living water." Because Christ, the Spirit of God, always comes toward us, if we'll just — I think the big key here is us recognizing that He is there, even in the hard moments. Even in the tough times, that He's there in the middle of it.
Derek Draughon:Philip, you know that I resigned the church a few months ago. You know that I've not had a job in four months now. I've had some odds and ends. My parents have hired me to do things. I've had little things here and there. But one thing that me and Courtney have recognized during these few months that we've been without work for the first time in our entire marriage — I didn't have a job — we have realized that God is our provider. He is our source for everything, and in every moment, he is there with us.
Derek Draughon:If you have a kid, if you have something to sacrifice, God is going to move heaven and earth to get to you.
Philip:Yes. When I first got married, literally the weekend — I got married on Saturday, I was back in church on Sunday, and this was a Monday morning service. We were having a conference. And this missionary from Spain was there, Smith his name was, and he wanted to buy a van to work in the hills of Spain with the gypsies. And I'm sitting and someone had given me some money, and I promised Chrissy I was going to buy a washing machine. We didn't have a washing machine.
Philip:And so I'm sitting in the platform, and this man's talking about his mission work in Spain, and the Holy Ghost said, "Give your money." And I mean, it was everything. Not wink, wink, everything. It was everything. And I'm sitting there and I said, "Lord, I've got a wife now. I can't just give money away." And he said, "Yeah, right. Sure." So I ended up giving the money to the missionary.
Philip:And I stayed at the Bible school and worked that afternoon, and someone says, "Chrissy's called you." And I went to the phone. She says, "Did you..." And I knew it was her, and I said, "What's wrong?" She says, "Did you order a washing machine?" Because I told her I'd given the money away. I says, "No." She said, "Well, there's two men at my door and they've got a washing machine that they're going to deliver to Mrs. Cameron." I says, "Open the door and let them in." Because God knew the money that I had was released to a van in Spain, and at the same time, His economy was big enough to provide a washing machine for this newlywed couple.
The Power of Sacrifice to Unlock Breakthrough
Philip:And if someone's watching today and you're waiting for God to show up in your crisis, in the middle of the Midianites attacking you, listen to me. God has a way through that little goat, the sacrifice he gave — released the miracles of provision that he saw when he slew the Midianites with 300 men.
Derek Draughon:Hallelujah. And I think a big thing in the church, and a big thing in the kingdom of God — when I say church, I'm not necessarily talking about a building. I'm talking about the people of God. The church. And I think the big thing is we settle to survive. We get okay with eating that loaf of bread. I mean, we get settled to survive.
Derek Draughon:Settled to survive. Where an angel shows up and says, "You're about to bring your whole people out of this if you'll be obedient." He could've said, "No, I'm making a loaf of bread so my family can eat some bread tonight. And we're okay." That's settling to survive. But when you step up and say, "Okay, God. Well, tell me what to do."
Derek Draughon:If you study out the word Midian, in there, there's the context of strife. They were brought in to bring strife. Because the people of God had been disobedient. And strife brings poverty. It brings poverty. But if you drive out the mocker, out goes the strife, and that's where abundance comes in. And when you get the mocker out of your mind, when there's somebody right now watching this program being spoken to, to give to you, and they're struggling with it — I want to say to them, don't settle to survive.
Settling to Survive vs. Stepping Into Abundance
Derek Draughon:If God's speaking to you to give to Orphan's Hands, to Daily Faith TV, do it now. Do it quickly. Obey quickly. Because then God will begin to show up and drive the mocker out of your life, and drive out the strife, and the abundance will come. You will be blessed. But man, I'm so tired of the church just settling to survive. I'm just over that, and that's the tendency. We always play the safe game.
Philip:Yes. And there's a hymn coming through my mind as you're talking. "My heart has no desire to stay where doubts arise and fears dismay. Though some may dwell where these abound, my constant aim is higher ground. Lord, lift me up and let me stand on Heaven's table land. Where light and love and joy abound. Lord, plant my feet on higher ground." And if giving is part of my stepping out in faith, you know me, for 35 years we have taken ridiculous risks, because God has never failed us yet. And if you're sitting right now, it's not time to settle. It's time to stir. It's time to stand up and say, "God, use me for your glory."
Driving Out Strife to Release Kingdom Abundance
Derek Draughon:Yes, and I think the key to that, being used for his glory, stepping up, the key is obedience. When he showed up in that winepress and said, "Mighty man of valor, mighty warrior, you wonderful guy that God's got his hand on," he could have said, "Move on, bro. I got to make a loaf of bread. I can't." But he didn't. He said, "Okay. If it's really you, if this is really what I'm feeling and seeing, then I'm going to make a sacrifice today, and I'm going to do it quickly." And when I do that, that's when God shows up in your life.
Derek Draughon:Hallelujah. But then the key to carrying that out is complete obedience. I've preached for years, half obedience is still disobedience. Kind of obeying is still disobedience. We have to obey the voice of God fully. I got a thing when I'm journaling, when God speaks to me, I've got a good friend now, Aaron. We'll sit down and we'll talk about the word, and if he feels something from my life, he'll tell me. I write it down in my journal, which nowadays I type it in my journal because I have an online journal. But I put it in my journal, and anything that's a word from God, I put H2:2 in the title, and that means Habakkuk 2:2. "Write the vision down, make it plain so that he who reads it can run with it."
Write the Vision Down: Habakkuk 2:2 in Practice
Derek Draughon:And if God is speaking to you today, listen to me. If you're a pastor, if you're just a believer, if you're a non-believer and you're becoming a believer right now, listen to me. If God's speaking to you, write the vision down, make it clear, read it every day in full obedience, and run with that vision. Run.
Philip:I just feel that God's speaking to someone today. The enemy is robbing you of your family, robbing you of whatever you have, the valuable things of your life. That's what the enemy's going to come after, the valuable things of your life. And I'm telling you now, the Holy Ghost wants to show up in your world. Have a sacrifice ready. Have that separating gift that says, "Lord, I'm not joking. I'm serious about this." And when you do, I promise you, He will provide, and He will destroy the enemies of your life.
Philip:That was so good. Derek, we've got a minute left. I can't tell you how much every time you come here, you bring a rhema. And I just know that God has great things in your future.
Derek Draughon:Amen. Well, hey, I love being on "Daily Faith", and I think what people need to do is have a little sacrifice bank. They can call it their goat bank instead of their piggy bank. And just have it ready, so when the Spirit of God shows up and says, "Do this now," they can jump on it so that the power of God can show up in their life.
Philip:I want you to check out Fuel Cast TV. Fuel Cast TV. It will blow your mind. This guy, if you've got a husband that he's kind of sticking around, and you want him to flow, you need to get in contact with Fuel Cast. Derek, thank you so much for being with me today. Every time you come here, you bring the word, and I love it. Thank you for watching "Daily Faith." Help us, will you, in this new outreach. God bless you today. Bye-bye.
For over 25 years, the Cameron family has been changing the lives of orphans in Romania and Moldova. From providing running water, flushing toilets, and clean wells to coal for heat, new windows, as well as food and clothing. They champion the physical needs of the orphans in these broken and desolate countries. Many of Moldova's orphans are saved from the horrors of trafficking through homes founded by the Camerons, and in the process, orphans become daughters and sons. They come to know their Heavenly Father and are forever changed by the love of Jesus.
Building a Sacrifice Bank for Instant Obedience
God helped the Camerons lift these amazing young men and women out of darkness. Now, no longer orphans, they want to return and invade that very same darkness with the light of Jesus Christ. The Orphans Hands equips these daughters and sons to become missionaries. Your monthly gift of $31 will allow us to rescue and take in more girls and boys, saving them from the hell of human trafficking. Your monthly partnership will allow us to care for those in The Orphans Hands homes in Moldova and the Ukraine.
If you want to join Philip and Chrissy in taking care of these precious young people, please contact us today by calling 833-DAILYFAITH. You can also give by going online to www.dailyfaith.tv, or by writing to Post Office Box 25, Clinton, Tennessee 37716. So many lives depend on what we do. Thank you for loving the lost.
Common questions
What does Derek Draughon say the story of Gideon in the winepress means for believers today?
Derek explains that the winepress was a symbol of wealth and abundance, but Gideon was hiding there just to scrape together enough wheat for a loaf of bread — basically just getting by. His message to believers is that if you're in the kingdom of God, you're standing in a place of abundance, even when it feels like you're barely surviving. The danger, he says, is settling to survive instead of stepping up in obedience to what God is calling you to do.
Why does Derek say Gideon's sacrifice was such a turning point?
Derek points out that the Midianites had stripped the land bare — no cattle, no donkeys — and all Gideon had was one kid (a young goat). But he sacrificed it to God anyway, and that act of obedience is what unlocked everything. Derek says that's the key principle: 'Everything turns when you bring a sacrifice to God,' even when what you have seems impossibly small.
How does Derek connect the idea of 'strife' and the Midianites to financial struggle?
Derek dug into the meaning of the word 'Midian' and found that it carries the context of strife. He explains that strife brings poverty, and the Midianites were sent because the people of God had been disobedient. His point is that when you drive out the 'mocker' — the voice of doubt or disobedience in your mind — the strife leaves with it, and that's when abundance can come in.
What has Derek's own season of unemployment taught him about God as a provider?
Derek shared that he resigned from his church a few months before the episode and had been without a steady job for four months — the first time in his entire marriage. He said that season taught him and his wife Courtney, in a very real way, that God is their provider and their source for everything. He described it as a lived-out confirmation that God shows up in the hard moments, not just the comfortable ones.
What practical habit does Derek recommend for when God speaks to you?
Derek says he journals every word he feels God speaks to him, and he titles those entries 'H2:2' — a reference to Habakkuk 2:2, which says to write the vision down and make it plain so that whoever reads it can run with it. His advice: write it down, read it every day, and then run with it in full obedience — because, as he puts it, half obedience is still disobedience.
